They were everywhere

Friday brought Doug out from Nevada and his brother Darrell down from Vermont to do some bass fishing and provide supper for the family. The fish were there but they were spread out more than earlier in the week. It seamed that we could only pick up one or two fish in each spot that we fished. That required us to fish in a lot of different spots. They fished hard and we did come out pretty well and they did manage to catch supper. In talking to another guide back at the dock I told him that we put a dent in the fish and he said that they put a scratch on them. He also saw a guide that usually works about 20 miles to the west of us so that doesn’t say a lot about what is going on in that direction. All in all we had a lot of laughs and caught supper too.image image

They are still out there

I took a short trip out this morning. Not quite as early as yesterday but not too late for some fun. The fish were right where I left them only a little smaller today. I stayed away from everyone else and fishing all by myself had a nice morning. The bait of choice is still baby butterfish. There are a few bluefish around of decent size and several schools of 12 inch ones.

Its August and the butterfish are in

I went out for a check ride today and to do a little fishing because its been almost two weeks since I caught a fish. I went to the right spot on the wrong tide and immediately found a nice bunch of bass that were spread out pretty well. I played with them for a bit. The two best were 12 & 15 lbs. the others were 5 - 8lbs. The tide slowed so I took a long ride to see if any other species have entered our waters yet. As far as I could tell Not Yet.

We're Back

I picked up the boat today from Atlantic Outboard and with a rebuilt trailer we made it back in the water. The lower unit was totaled just from a bunch of mono that someone tossed overboard. Considering the parts had to come from Wisconsin I think the guys did an exceptional job to get me back in the water in only one week. I went for a test ride and everything worked just right. I’m getting reports of some big bluefish around. The water temps are above normal for this time of year so there is no telling what might show up. I’ll keep you posted.

The good news and the bad news

I had a trip this morning and the weather was perfect, That’s the good news. We were on the backside of Fishers when the lower unit on the motor blew. That’s the bad news. We got towed back to the dock in a very timely manner thanks to Tow Boat US. That’s the good news. I had to go back home to pick up the trailer and take it to Westbrook. That’s the bad news. I made it there safely and the repairs will be covered by warranty, that’s the good news. As I was backing the trailer into a parking spot one of the axels snapped. That too is the bad news. They will be able to put the boat on blocks and take the trailer to a shop for an overhaul while they repair the engine.  I was planning to do that anyway. So that’s still good news.If it happened 10 minutes earlier it would have been on Rt. 95 and I would have been on the Six O’clock news. That would have been more bad news. Now I’m home for the week and am about to make an adult beverage and that’s the good news.

Is a swarm of fish bigger than a school of fish ?

For some strange reason I got up early today and went for a boat ride. The sun was coming up and the fog was coming in. The tide was starting to flood so I went out to my favorite spot and then to my next favorite spot. The first hour resulted in a big zero. The fog started to lift so I took a ride. Saw a few birds then a few fish then a lot of fish then a ton of fish. I haven’t seen so many bass in a couple of years. There were so many I crimped the barb and tried to get the singles on the edges to bite instead of just throwing it in the middle of the schools. Most fish were around eight lbs. with the biggest about 12 or so. I had nonstop action for two hours and then it tapered off for another hour and by then it was pretty bright so I called it a day. There were large schools of bait and you could see the bass swim through them. This could be a good summer.
