Road Trip
We decided to take a ride down the NJ turnpike to the Fly Fishing Show at Somerset. Nice ride except the back up at the GW Bridge. We got to catch up with some old friends and buy some supplies for next season. Compared notes with JB on BF and Bruce. We were in agreement. He sends his congradulations. Its getting near the time to start tying again. Stay warm it won’t be too long.

I'm getting sick of the snow
This has been a very slow moving winter for me so far. I’m spending too much time with the snow blower. A lot of people ask me what I do in the winter. Usually after the Christmas Tree comes down I get to read some books and play with the computer. I’ve been teaching a fly tying class through Norwich’s Adult Ed. program and that was fun. But this year they cut the program for budget reasons. So this has been the year of remodeling. Instead of going to fly shops I’ve been going to Home Depot. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks I’ll be all caught up. February is when I start tying flies for next season. Each year the fish like something a little different. I’m going to try something in pink and see what happens.
Gail is looking at two surgery’s in the next few weeks. One to repair a torn ligament on her casting thumb and the other for a rotator cuff on the same arm. Who said fly fishing is for sissies. With some luck she will be ready for our Salmon trip in April. I’ll keep you posted.
Also I have my new book for next year so call if you know of any dates. We will be going to my old Helicopter Company’s reunion in Sept. The timing is not good because that’s going to take about five days out of the month that I won’t be able to fish.
Stay warm.

Watch out Earnest Hemingway
During this past summer I was contacted by an editor from the Fisherman Magazine about doing an article on Gail and women in fishing. I thought that it might be fun so I said OK. I finally wrote the piece and they published it in this weeks New England Edition. It came out pretty well with help from the editors. I don’t think that I will give up my day job but it actually was fun.

The fat lady has sung
I put the boat back in the water on Monday and went for a 40 mile boat ride. The water was as calm as it could be and I could see a fish break within a mile from the boat. The only problem was that I didn’t see any fish or bait or birds. I think that the weekend storm pushed everything offshore. At best it will take a few days for things to get back to normal if they can. In the meantime I don’t want to get up in 30 degree temps and go for a long empty boat ride and I don’t expect my anglers to enjoy it either. I heard from a friend that guides out of Orient Point LI. and he had the same experience yesterday also. I made a command decision and called it a season. The boat is now safe in my driveway waiting to be put away. for the winter. I want to thank all of my anglers for another fun season. Have a safe winter and I hope to see you next year.

Another short story
I fished on Wed. by myself. Caught two albies and dropped a third. Someone put a barbless crease fly in my bag. It was probably me. Pulled the boat out of the water for this weekends storm. Should be back in by Tues. I saw my first school of baby bunker so that’s a good sign cuz the anchovies are starting to thin out. There are a lot of bass to the north and quite a few albies still around here. The bonito are due for a final burst. If we can get the weather to help it could still be a great fall. I’ll keep you posted.

Catching fish part two
Monday Peter came back for some more excitement without the wind and four foot seas. We went back to the spots where we had the best fishing on Sunday. There are three places that are fairly close together so we don’t have to waste a lot of time running around. Also they aren’t as popular as the other places and are a lot less crowded. We had a bunch of bluefish at first light followed by daylight and then the albies showed up. We had some great shots at them and several times we had multiple hookups. Monday’s choice for them was plastic. Sunday it was steel. It changes every day. Here is Peter with one of Mondays fish.
